Most people who write lots of lisp tend to only sparsely use empty
"separator" lines within forms. In lisp they feel unnecessary and
since most files stick to this convention we get a bit confused
when there are extra empty lines. It feels like the s-expressions
are falling into pieces.
All of this is especially true between a function's doc-string and
body because the doc-string is colored differently, which visually
already separates it quite sufficiently from the code that follows.
Fixed emacs docstrings to be consistent. No functional change.
- removed some (accidental) indentation
- removed some trailing newlines
- added trailing periods where missing (some exclusions)
Starting with Emacs 27 the old `cl' implementation is finally
considered obsolete. Previously its use was strongly discouraged
at run-time but one was still allowed to use it at compile-time.
For the most part the transition is very simple and boils down to
adding the "cl-" prefix to some symbols. A few replacements do not
follow that simple pattern; e.g. `first' is replaced with `car',
even though the alias `cl-first' exists, because the latter is not
idiomatic emacs-lisp.
In a few cases we start using `pcase-let' or `pcase-lambda' instead
of renaming e.g. `first' to `car'. That way we can remind the reader
of the meaning of the various parts of the data that is being
deconstructed.
An obsolete `lexical-let' and a `lexical-let*' are replaced with their
regular variants `let' and `let*' even though we do not at the same
time enable `lexical-binding' for that file. That is the right thing
to do because it does not actually make a difference in those cases
whether lexical bindings are used or not, and because this should be
enabled in a separate commit.
We need to explicitly depend on the `cl-lib' package because Emacs
24.1 and 24.2 lack that library. When using these releases we end
up using the backport from GNU Elpa.
We need to explicitly require the `pcase' library because
`pcase-dolist' was not autoloaded until Emacs 25.1.
Add x and X binds to notmuch-tree for functionally that we have in
notmuch-show.
The notmuch-tree-quit binding is somewhat redundant, since it is
handled by notmuch-bury-or-kill-this-buffer which is bound to q.

This functions removes some duplicate logic between
notmuch-tree-{next,prev}-matching-message
We do this because we will be adding some additional logic similar to
the notmuch-show-next-open-message function, and it will help if this
logic is all in one place.

This function captures some common logic when jumping to matching
messages in notmuch-tree mode.
We also add a new return value (t or nil), that indicates if there was
a next matching message in the thread to show.

We have shortcuts S and Z to let the user switch to Search view and
Tree view with the current search. Add U to let the user switch to
unthreaded view from the current search, and ensure that S and Z
switch from unthreaded to search and tree veiew respectively.
Tree mode allows the user to choose whether to use the split screen
displaying just the current message or a full screen displaying the
entire thread. As unthreaded mode is quite different in use the user
may want a different customisation for this mode.
It is likely that the user will want a different line format for
unthreaded mode from tree mode; in particular the thread structure
graphics are unnecessary in unthreaded mode.
Add a new customisable variable and set it to something sensible.
This commit introduces a new 'unthreaded' search mode where each
matching message is shown on a separate line. It shares almost all of
its code with tree view. Subsequent commits will allow it to diverge
slightly in appearance.
notmuch-tree did not protect against concurrent refreshes like
notmuch-search, meaning, hitting '=' (notmuch-refresh-this-buffer)
quickly will spawn multiple parallel notmuch processes, and clobber
the existing results in the current buffer.
* notmuch-tree.el: Add a guard to notmuch-tree-refresh-view similar to
the one in notmuch-search.
The queries "" and "*" are special cased in the notmuch library to
match all messages, but only if they're the entire query. They can't
be combined with other queries, such as "* AND foo", in which case
they "leak" down to the Xapian query parser.
Notmuch show and tree buffers inadvertently combine the thread query
with said special queries, causing incorrect collapsing of
messages. Handle the special queries specially. We already do a
similar thing in notmuch-search-filter.
Previously notmuch tree did not specify the format-version when
calling notmuch. This meant that when the structured output was
slightly changed (in commit 14c60cf168)
stash filename broke. This fixes this breakage by specifying the
format-version.
Provide functionality to resume editing a message previously saved with
notmuch-draft-save, including decoding the X-Notmuch-Emacs-Secure
header.
Resume gets the raw file from notmuch and using the emacs function
mime-to-mml reconstructs the message (including attachments).
'e' is bound to resume a draft from show or tree mode.
We want to use "e" for editting postponed messages in show, and in
tree view, so remove the binding for the function which does
(In message pane) Activate BUTTON or button at point
This makes replying to a message in tree view, use the decrypted state
from the message pane if it is open. Previously it just used the
global decryption state from notmuch-crypto-process-mime.
In particular if notmuch-crypto-process-mime is nil, and the user
views the messages (which doesn't decrypt), toggles decryption in the
message pane, and then replies, the reply will be decrypted.
This makes $ in the tree pane toggle decryption in the message
pane. Without this the user can only decrypt the message pane by
switching to it, or by setting decryption on globally by setting
notmuch-crypto-process-mime to t.
This makes tag changes appear in the message pane as well as in the
tree window.
Note that the message pane is reloaded each time a message is viewed
so the tags shown in the message pane can still be different from
those in the tree window. Usually this will just be that the tag
change is still shown as a change (strikethough underline etc) in the
tree window, and are shown after the change in the message
pane. However, if something else updates the database then the tags
shown can be genuinely different.
This tweaks the keybindings in tree-mode. It make b do bounce/resend
matching show-mode. Since b was already bound to scroll message pane
back, we now use backspace for that.
This means space/backspace scroll the message pane forwards/backwards,
and page-up/page-down scrolls the tree pane forwards/backwards.
j is in the global notmuch keymap bound to notmuch jump. In tree-mode
it makes sense to close the message pane first (otherwise the new
search runs in the small top pane of tree-mode).
Many of the external links found in the notmuch source can be resolved
using https instead of http. This changeset addresses as many as i
could find, without touching the e-mail corpus or expected outputs
found in tests.
Formerly replying to an encrypted message in tree-view did not work:
the message was not decrypted. This commit makes notmuch-tree respect
the setting of notmuch-crypto-process-mime. In particular, if
notmuch-crypto-process-mime is set to t, then replying to encrypted
messages in tree mode will now decrypt the reply (as it already did in
show mode).
The mark read code for tree mode did not get updated in the recent
changes. This updates it to match. Since the user can customize the
mark read logic we just call the show logic in the message pane.
tree overrides notmuch-show-get-prop so that it can use many of the
utility function directly. Now that tree is in mainline the version
from tree can be moved to show and the original overridden show
version dropped.
This adds the current query as a "default value" to
notmuch-read-qeury. The default value is available via a down-arrow as
opposed to history which is available from the up arrow.
Note if a user presses return in the minibuffer this value is not
returned.
The implementation is simple but notmuch-read-query could be called
via notmuch-search/notmuch-tree etc from any buffer so it makes sense
to put the decision of how to extract the current query in
notmuch-read-query rather than in each of the callers.
This uses the recent functionality to show the tag changes in the tree
buffer. Currently this is only used to show changes the tree buffer
makes itself: i.e., it does not make display any changes reflecting
tagging done by other notmuch-buffers.
This allows (and requires) the original-tags to be passed along with
the current-tags to be passed to notmuch-tag-format-tags. This allows
the tag formatting to show added and deleted tags.By default a removed
tag is displayed with strike-through in red (if strike-through is not
available, eg on a terminal, inverse video is used instead) and an
added tag is displayed underlined in green.
If the caller does not wish to use the new feature it can pass
current-tags for both arguments and, at this point, we do exactly that
in the three callers of this function.
Note, we cannot tidily allow original-tags to be optional because we would
need to distinguish nil meaning "we are not specifying original-tags"
from nil meaning there were no original-tags (an empty list).
We use this in subsequent patches to make it clear when a message was
unread when you first loaded a show buffer (previously the unread tag
could be removed before a user realised that it had been unread).
The code adds into the existing tag formatting code. The user can
specify exactly how a tag should be displayed normally, when deleted,
or when added.
Since the formatting code matches regexps a user can match all deleted
tags with a ".*" in notmuch-tag-deleted-formats. For example setting
notmuch-tag-deleted-formats to '((".*" nil)) tells notmuch not to show
deleted tags at all.
All the variables are customizable; however, more complicated cases
like changing the face depending on the type of display will require
custom lisp.
Currently this overrides notmuch-tag-deleted-formats for the tests
setting it to '((".*" nil)) so that they get removed from the display
and, thus, all tests still pass.
This modifies `notmuch-tag-format-tag' to treat the keys of
`notmuch-tag-formats' as (anchored) regexps, rather than literal
strings. This is clearly more flexible, as it allows for prefix
matching, defining a fallback format, etc. This may cause compatibility
problems if people have customized `notmuch-tag-formats' to match tags
that contain regexp specials, but this seems unlikely.
Regular expression matching has quite a performance hit over string
lookup, so this also introduces a simple cache from exact tags to
formatted strings. The number of unique tags is likely to be quite
small, so this cache should have a high hit rate. In addition to
eliminating the regexp lookup in the common case, this cache stores
fully formatted tags, eliminating the repeated evaluation of potentially
expensive, user-specified formatting code. This makes regexp lookup at
least as fast as assoc for unformatted tags (e.g., inbox) and *faster*
than the current code for formatted tags (e.g., unread):

(Though even at 7.2 usec, tag formatting is not our top bottleneck.)
This cache must be explicitly cleared to keep it coherent, so this adds
the appropriate clearing calls.
This combines our two face combining functions into one, easy to use
function with a much shorter name: `notmuch-apply-face'. This
function takes the full set of arguments that
`notmuch-combine-face-text-property' took, but takes them in a more
convenient order and provides smarter defaults that make the function
easy to use on both strings and buffers.
Previously tree did not use tag-format-tags: since tree wants to
distinguish matching messages from non-matching messages it is not a
perfect fit.
However, in preparation for allowing tag-changes to be shown (i.e.,
added or deleted tags to be indicated) it is convenient to make all
places displaying tags call the same routines.
We modify notmuch-tag-format-tags slightly so that it can take and
argument for the default characteristics of the face before the
special tag features are applied.
This also means that things like the star symbol for flagged messages
all work in tree.
This adds default faces for matching and non-matching messages. This
makes it easier for a user to do broad customization without having to
customize every field. It also fits more neatly with the next patch
which switches to using notmuch-tag-format-tags for tag formatting.
We set the field specific face customization to nil for all the fields
which use the message default face to make it clear to a user which
fields customizations are being used.
Previously the tags on each line in tree view were separarted by ", "
not just " ". This is different from show and search views.
This patch removes this comma. This is a large patch as essentially
every line of each of the expected outputs in the tree tests needs
updating.
Apart from aesthetic reasons this simplifies the switch to
notmuch-tag-format-tags in the next patch.
Previously notmuch-tree-get-message-id always returned the id
including the prefix "id:". Modify the function to take an optional
`bare' argument saying to return the raw string.
This will be useful later and brings the function in line with
notmuch-show-get-message-id.
Following a suggestion by Austin in id:20130915153642.GY1426@mit.edu
we use remap for the over-riding bindings in pick. This means that if
the user modifies the global keymap these modifications will happen in
the tree-view versions of them too.

before doing the action, so the functionality is very close to the
original common keymap function.]
